Fruiting Body vs Mycelium: Which Lion's Mane Is Better?

It is the single biggest quality fork in the category. Two products can share a name and a price and still not contain the same thing.

The short version

The fruiting body is the actual mushroom. Mycelium is the root-like network the fungus grows first, and in many supplements it is grown on grain and milled together with that grain. For most buyers a concentrated fruiting-body extract is the more reliable choice, because it generally carries higher and more consistent levels of the mushroom's characteristic compounds.12

What the two parts actually are

A mushroom has a life cycle, and supplements can be made from different stages of it, which is where the confusion starts.

The mycelium is a web of fine threads the fungus sends out to feed, a bit like roots. Under the right conditions the mycelium fruits, producing the visible mushroom, which is called the fruiting body. Both contain compounds of interest, and both are studied.1 The practical difference is how each is grown and sold. Fruiting bodies are typically cultivated to maturity and then extracted. Mycelium for supplements is often grown quickly on a bed of grain such as rice or oats, then the whole mass, mycelium plus grain, is dried and powdered together.

Why mycelium on grain is the sticking point

The issue is not that mycelium is useless. It is that mycelium grown on grain is hard to measure honestly.

None of this requires you to distrust every mycelium product. It just means the burden of proof is higher, and most makers who sell mycelium on grain do not clear it.

Why beta-glucans are the better yardstick

Beta-glucans are compounds concentrated in mushroom cell walls, and they have become a common marker for judging extract quality.

The reason a beta-glucan percentage is more useful than a total-polysaccharide number is that beta-glucans are harder to fake with starch. A maker that publishes a beta-glucan figure, verified by a third party, is giving you a number you can actually compare between products.3 A label that lists only total polysaccharides, or no number at all, is leaving you to guess. Note too that the notable human trials of lion's mane, including the 2009 cognitive study and the 2023 pilot, used fruiting-body or whole-mushroom preparations rather than mycelium on grain.45

Does mycelium have any benefits?

Mycelium contains its own compounds and is an area of active research, so it is not worthless. The issue is mostly transparency and concentration: mycelium grown on grain and sold without separating the substrate makes it hard to know how much mushroom you are actually getting. A clearly labeled fruiting-body extract removes that guesswork.
